pat was on a national tour for several weeks with the flatlanders, and last month they played a gig at bb king's. he's got some great stories about being on a bus every day with six other guys, and he says they've all bonded and become really close.

Danny sez, "Blogger Julie of TangoBaby was walking past a begging homeless woman, K, and her two kids in San Francisco, agonising about how she couldn't do anything to help -- when she realised she could. She wrote up the story of the family, took photos, and started telling their story on her blog. Now she's working with her readers to get a fair deal for K in SF's bureacratic system for handling the homeless in the city, and recording the troubles and opportunities they're having on the way."

We talked, and I learned her name was K. and asked her about the shelters in town. She rattled off the names of homes that I know are where abused women and children escape to when their lives are in danger.

None of the shelters had rooms for her and her children.

Then it dawned on me that maybe I could do more than give her $30 and hope someone else gives her another $30 so the young family can find a place to sleep tonight. I asked her if we could share her photos and her story so that somewhere, some of you might be able to help.

K's eyes are perpetually brimming with tears. She's tiny and her hands are chilled. Baby M is sleeping under a blanket on her chest. The two younger children, D and Little K, are relatively quiet considering their ages. At 7 and 9, they could be tearing up the sidewalks, but they're not.

When I explain to K about my blog and that I hope that maybe someone out there reading might have a way to help, she thinks it's a good idea and says it's okay to take the pictures. "It can't be any more embarrassing than what I'm doing now," she says.

i'm going to try and get back on my regular schedule of 'my week' mondays, and before osman floods us with sxsw stories and photos, i'm gonna slip in a posting real quick. i had some leftover yen in my pocket from my last trip to mccarren park, so on wednesday i went down to the financial district to exchange it. this is the church just east of ground zero. in the background is one liberty street plaza, the building that i worked in cleaning computers in the months following 9-11. and that's another story altogether.

what are 'alcohol drugs'? and how are they destroying my life? follow jesus? read the bible? um...according to the bible, jesus miraculously made alcohol out of water. so aren't you sending mixed signals, pal? get your shit out of my face. i've got yen to exchange for american dollars. which i'm going to spend on more alcohol drugs. oh god, my life....

damien had a birthday on wednesday night, and since everyone skipped town for sxsw, no one showed up. :(

first post of '09. the kaiser-kennedi's hosted a new year's eve cocktail party, and i know there are some that were pretty crabby about seeing '08 come to a close.

i will be riding in this 'parade' on the way to walk bitches tomorrow. and i'm glad i will be spending a rainy morning doing that. i've ridden my bike for the past six-months through south williamsburg, and i've seen countless examples of hasids being horrible drivers AND pedestrians. they double park in the bike lane, and consistently cross the street without looking either way. i've had to yell at my fair share "HEY!" or a profanity or two just to get their attention. if they'd pay attention to the world around them, they wouldn't complain about cyclists' 'immodesty'.

"Shilpa Ray is a petite powerhouse, roaring and moaning about love, horror and Solomon Grundy in a raw, bluesy alto while pumping atmospheric chords on a harmonium." --The New York Times
Expect her to be unbelievably famous one day. Really. (If you go to the Beat the Devil site listen to "Shine in Exile") The bass player, Mishka Shubaly does solo stuff too.
3. Team B - I've never posted about them but they are playing tomorrow night (Monday) at Union Pool. Piloted by Arcade Fire/Beirut member Kelly Pratt, includes LCD Soundsystem's Pat Mahoney on drums plus Jon Natchez and Perrin Cloutier from Beirut and Richard Reed Parry from Arcade Fire. Not bad.

Tuesday was a great victory for us all, but the battle still continues. I got really psyched last night when my mom told me she had just come back from a protest in front of the Mormon Church. Ironically, the Los Angeles Mormon temple is located on Santa Monica Blvd., the heaviest trafficked male prostitution street in LA. There are numerous cases being taken to the courts as well petitions to be signed. Most petitions require CA residency, but here's one that doesn't, Mormons Stole Our Rights. saturday was mostly used for recovery and prepping for sunday's big marathon party, so not much happened. but on sunday, nate and i were up at 8 am, cooking and getting ready for guests. we had about thirty people come to support josh wright, who ran in the race. here is one of josh's #1 fans, emmylou. i'm not sure what breed she is, but she's super sweet, adorable, texan, and...she's our pet of the week.

our favorite swedies have decided to grace us with their grace again for three weeks. just the thought of josh running twenty-six miles made them tired. or it could've been a case of jetlag.

We thought it would never happen, but we Manske's finally figured out a way to make a girl. Our brother Pat and his woman Jamie welcomed Willa James Manske to the world yesterday. She's 6 pounds, 12.5 oz and 18" long.

And in case anyone doesn't know, there's a big election going on. Toss the two together and you get something that looks like this.

what better place to start off than mcdonalds? patrick and james (hey...my brother's name is patrick james. weird.) are questioning their dining decisions, while nghia's checking out some chick mcnuggets.

nghia's chingo bling birthday came around. even though it was the best night of nghia's life, osman and i decided to wear black.

CMJ was last week, and it was a blast. i was out of town last year, so i made up for it this year by seeing shows every day. jac may have broken her own record for seeing a band on consecutive days. according to sources, she saw her new favorite boy band, friendly fires, four times in four days. the kaiser chiefs are jealous.

we had a few hours between shows, and someone decided to kill the time and brain cells at max fish. jenny got smashed.

we were killing time because the friction show at cake shop didn't start until frickin' 1:00 in the morning. here are the two lead singers of 'best fwends'. worst band name ever.

i call this cherry on the killers. my bike's name is cherry, after a tom robbin's character, and jac and i were discussing whether or not the killers are the greatest rock band ever.

birthday boy and mason listen to me explain how happy endings was dead anywayz. then we got kicked out for a private party.

tony romo is not going to be able to play this weekend because of a broken pinkie. he and jessica look concerned about the cowboys chances against the defending champs.

monday movie madness with me and charlie kaufman

Charlie Kaufman has a new movie out. That’s all we need to know. It doesn’t matter who stars in it or what the plot is, all we need to know is that Charlie Kaufman wrote and directed it. (His directorial debut) Seriously, it could be two hours of nothing but a black screen and Bill O’Reilly audio and I can still guarantee that its one of the best movies of the year. And even if I’m wrong, even if by some Chernobyl-like screw up it does happen to suck, it really doesn’t matter because we need to support this man. Consider it a non-tax deductable donation to save an endangered species. In a truly neurotic, classically Kaufman-like fashion the man is threatening to quit screenwriting. (As if he’s going to suddenly pick up a copy of “What color is your Parachute?” and realize he was destined to work in the world of finance.)
